J had his one year doctor’s appointment yesterday. I flipped out when we sat him on the scale and he hadn’t gained any weight. It looks like his growth went straight to his length, 3 inches taller than he was at 9 months. So when the doctor comes in the room he asks his normal milestone questions, J has reached almost all of them and is ahead of the game for already walking. He knows his first word “momma” and can sign 3 words. But in his weight he is only in the third percentile.
So the doctor said we need to do all we can to fatten him up, starting with one serving a day of carnation instant breakfast, and putting olive oil in some of the foods I prepare for him, like mashed potatoes and mac n cheese. That’s fine, since we can start giving him table foods. He has been eating 3 stage 2 or 3 foods a day, but these foods are not fattening enough. So along with giving him whole milk now, and the carnation instant breakfast we are to try whatever we can to put weight on this kid. So yesterday I made him eggs with cheese, he wasn’t very fond of it, threw it off his high chair, then this morning with a little butter, instead of using vegetable oil since we didn’t have olive oil, I put it in a pan to make his potato rounds. He loved them, ate almost all of them. Then I gave him oatmeal and a bottle of whole milk for breakfast. 2 hours later he had some yogurt because he was acting hungry. He still eats on 2 hour intervals, which is normal since he has a fast metabolism like me.
Anyway, I make him another bottle for his nap coming up at 11am today and after getting done with the bottle, I set him in the pack n play because C was asleep upstairs in J’s crib. He starts crying like I suspected him to do. He’s been good lately at putting himself to sleep, but he almost always sleeps in his own crib, not the pack n play downstairs where the other babies sleep, so I expected a little fuss. He starts screaming, so I pick him up and as I do so, a fountain of vomit comes up all over me, him the floor, the inside of the pack n play, his blanket, his stuffed animals and he starts to whale! At that moment, I had absolutely no idea what to do! I just froze holding him, not knowing where to begin. Covered in vomit, I try consoling him as I know he’s not feeling well and wait for him to calm down before I strip his clothes off of him. Poor J had it in his ears from when he turned his head! I set him on the kitchen floor while I wiped up his face and took his clothes off.
Then I looked at myself and saw how much was on me and the smell was horrid. I looked at our carpet and it was like someone dumped pig slop on it! It is a good thing we have our own steam cleaner. With J stripped down to his diaper I set him in the other pack n play while I strip the bedding from the one he was going to be napping in and set it on the stairs. Then with a towel I mop up what I can off the carpet and tile. Then came the steam cleaner and doing a load of laundry.
I peeked in to see if C was awake and she was playing in the crib. I put her in a little jumper while I loaded up the laundry and she loved it. Had the brightest smile!
Anyway, thankfully J has had another bottle and some food before he went down for his afternoon nap.
But back to why J threw up, that is the mystery. There is only one other time he threw up like this and it was after we made him a mini pancake. We didn’t use any oil or butter in the pan when we made it, so what is it that upset his stomach? Was it the buttermilk or an oil of some sort? That is what we have to find out. His vomiting was so violent, I don’t want a repeat of it, but what would be in a potato round that would be in a pancake, unless it is an oil that was also in the fake butter I used with the potato round? Anyway, we have to be careful now as this has happened twice. He has had a french fry just fine and he eats the country potatoes at Alvin’s for breakfast on Saturdays and I’m sure those are deep-fried.
I know for sure it wasn’t an unwashed bottle because I use soap and a bottle scrubby every time.
Anyway lets hope this isn’t serious. I felt so bad for poor J. The last time this happened he just whimpered in my arms for about a half hour, you could tell he was nauseated. 🙁
