Make Some Cash By Spring Cleaning!

Lately I’ve been going thru our house trying todeclutter. I kinda have the spring cleaning bug, but I’ve found some ways todeclutter while making a little cash. For example, I list all my gently used baby items either on Craig’s list or in an onlinebuy sell or swap group. Sometimes though, people show no interest in the items and you either have to give the item away or put them in a garage sale.

Last year, I think it was in June or July, we had our first ever garage sale, it was nice to make some “change” off the junk that was taking up space in our garage. Somehow though it all seems to creep back in, so we will be preparing for another garages sale soon.

At the townhouse we weren’t allowed to have garage sales per HOA, but thankfully we don’t live in an HOA neighborhood anymore, so it looks like we’ll be able to have one every spring as a part of our spring cleaning efforts. I’m happy about that as it’s a great way to get rid of a large amount of stuff at one time. Sometimes though after garage sales, some of the things that you wished would have sold, are still sitting there in the boxes overlooked. Then its like, what do you do with this stuff? If its clothes I usually take it to Good Will. But sometimes you still see value in the things that you own and don’t just want to give them away. I find it so hard to put some items in the giveaway pile when I know how much I spent on that item and still see that it could be valuable to someone.

For example records, cassettes and DVDs. Back before the HD DVD vs. Blue-ray war, we bought a bunch of HD DVDs, but we don’t have a player for it anymore. My husband used to play the HD DVD’s in an xbox, and I think it’s still possible to do that, but the xbox is in the man cave, so only Hunky Hubs can enjoy them. Thankfully we didn’t buy too many but they are taking up space on our DVD racks.

So I love it when I can find a good place to sell those items of entertainment value that generally won’t peak the interest of a Craig’s list buyer.

One thing’s for sure though, it’s a lot easier to list your items and sell them online nowadays, and why not use spring cleaning as a means to make some cash? Already I’ve sold a car seat and an exersaucer that baby B has grown out of, and I have plans to sell the car seat stroller combo both kids used in infancy and I hope that I can save up enough money from selling items to either get a second umbrella for our deck outback, or a trampoline for the kids.

I also have some cloth diapers that I plan to sell on diaperswappers  and a ton of baby items up in the closet that tend to go fast, so finding the right niche for selling items online is important, but its so worth doing especially, if there are items that you want, that are just a bit out of reach financially, but wouldn’t be if you sold those items that are of no value to you anymore.

I’m so thankful that you can sell so many things online these days. I can tell you write now, I love making some cash, and most people love finding something that might be essentially brand new, but more than half off the original price.

So yes, spring cleaning can be worth more than just finding change between the couch cushions. 😉

  1. Thankfully I haven’t had many nay sayers come to my door. I don’t get to the post office much, so its nice when someone physically takes the item off my hands and I don’t have to worry about shipping. But my husband loves ebay. I sometimes feel a little weird with people coming to my house though, so I tend to meet up in a public place. That can probably take as much effort as shipping stuff.

  2. Definitely great ideas to make some extra cash, I love it!

My oldest daughter used to take her clothes to Plato’s Closet to sell clothes she wouldn’t use anymore…These are pretty cool ways to make a little extra mad money.

Thanks for sharing these tips! Have a great weekend 🙂

  3. GREAT tips! I have totally begun sharing everything on Ebay. Craigslist is great for big items but I HATE people coming to my door to look at things then decide –nah! I now run my own Ebay store! Fun, extra money, and reducing clutter…BONUS is that my kids are learning a lot about business!

  4. This is a great reminder for me…we did recently get rid of a lot of old clothes, but I really need to declutter and organize even more. There’s a neighborhood yard sale coming up that I’d love to try and take part in.

What do you think?
