Out of Africa For My Six Year Old’s Birthday!

Adults BrentwoodHome Pillow

So last weekend my oldest turned six years old. And let me tell ya, I heard about his birthday and what he wanted since Christmas. He wouldn’t let me forget it! Knowing that if he had a birthday party, he would get tons of more toys, just three months after Christmas, so we wanted to do something different for his birthday this year. I mean his playroom is so full of toys, we would probably have to get rid of new toys just to accommodate birthday toys and frankly I’m done with the toy clutter.

So I decided instead of doing a birthday party, we would give young JJ an experience. We decided to take a family trip down to Out of Africa. It’s about an hour drive from where we live and thought it would make a nice day trip.

We had never been to Out of Africa before, but were pleasantly surprised with the bus tours, being able to feed giraffes and even tigers. It was a nice family experience and of course I had to take a ton of pictures!

One of the first things we got to do was take a trolley through the park and visit some of the animals we could feed, like giraffes and zebras. Giraffes love celery.

Hi Giraffe!

Baby Zebra!

ostrachmohthostrich. Ostriches love shiny things. If you had keys, this one would snatch them and run off.

Pacing….totally ready to eat!

JJ feeding a tiger! How many six-year olds can say they’ve fed a tiger?

This is a giant yellow python that looks to be about as big as a bean bag chair. Can you imagine being alone with this creature?!

I believe this is the “Ball” python, but I could be wrong. Look at the size of its head?!

This was a lioness who was pacing back and forth waiting for one of her friends to return from the water show.

You could even feed prairie dogs. These guys were not shy at all…patiently waiting for me to drop food.

bear

A black bear…seemed very sweet and playful.

And I saw these blossoms growing along the side of one of the paths and just had to get the Nikon out.

Have you ever nixed the traditional birthday party for your child and done something different?

We probably won’t do this every year as I know JJ will be very excited to invite friends to parties in the coming years, but this seemed like a very nice family day together and he got to back to school on monday and tell all his friends he fed a tiger.

  1. Such a great idea! I’d like to do something like this for my daughter when she gets older. Right now, she loves inviting her friends to come to her parties.

  2. I love the giraffe! I think if a child is so looking forward to doing something special on his or her birthday, you really should try to make it happen. Good that you got so many great pics of this.

  3. Sounds like a lot of fun. It was my daughters bday in December & shewas talking about what she wanted for her next one by January!!

  4. This sounds like a great way to celebrate a special day. We have a yellow python at our zoo exactly like the one above. His name is Mustard.

  5. I think this is an excellent idea for a different kind of “Birthday Day” and it looks like he enjoyed it immensely.

  6. I love that you got to feed the animals! What an amazing birthday experience! My little guy has a December birthday, and we have done a few activities rather than birthdays for him because it’s so hard to get people together right before Christmas.

    1. Yeah some of the drawbacks for having a winter or early spring birthday is you can’t really have a birthday party with a lot of people over unless you have a large house to accomidate everyone or you rent a a place to have it at indoors. I have this problem with both my sons since they are winter babies.

    1. Ha ha! You’re welcome Liz. Yeah Out of Africa is such a unique place and you really do feel very close to the animals, but also very safe. It was a nice day trip!

  7. Heather – what fun – great birthday idea and your images are fabulous – there is no Out of Africa near us – but, I did take my son as a little guy to all the zoos around us – it is just so fun – and your little guys are cuties!

  8. Feeding a tiger sure beats more toys!! And he probably got to tell about the whole adventure to the class! I doubt he will ever forget this birthday!

What do you think?
