The interior of the home is always under the microscope. Do this, change that, and make sure those are shining. Every couple of months, there will be a rethink and something will go. If the interior isn’t on point, then it feels as if something is wrong, as if the house is going stale.
Meanwhile, the exterior barely gets any attention. Sure, you’ll mow the lawn in the summertime but only to maintain your HOA’s policies. Otherwise, the outside of the property would look like the Amazon jungle.
Curb appeal is essential though because the exterior of your home is the first impression. If you care about kicking off on the right foot, here are four blunders to avoid.
#1: No Outdoor Rug
Furniture is crucial. Without it, it’s far harder to relax outside and enjoy the sun. And, if you’re an entertainer, then good luck getting the peeps around if they have to sit on the floor. A sofa and an armchair are synonymous with gardens around the world, but the one thing that is always missing is a rug. Why is it important? Well, it adds a sense of warmth to the area. Mother Nature is cold and bare, especially with stone paving, yet rugs are thick and luscious. Plus, it brings all the elements together.
#2: Stupid Storage
There is more space outside than in, but there may not be an acre to spare. Some people live in the city and their gardens are short and sweet. In that case, storage should never be stupid. Instead, it must be clever and kill two birds with one stone. For instance, some benches hold clutter and act as a seating area at the same time. Ikea.com has a great range to choose from so give it a try. Remember that anything that is bulky and only has one purpose is a luxury you can’t afford.
#3: A Pool
Where to begin? It doesn’t add value to the property unless of course, you live in hot climates like Phoenix, Florida or Texas where a pool would be a welcome sight to enjoying the great outdoors. Pools, however, can be hard to maintain, and dangerous if not gated. Kids love to play outside but it’s difficult to let them when one slip could be fatal. Parents always have to be extra careful with a swimming pool. The good news is that there is an alternative – a fountain. Granted, you can’t cool off in one yet you can find something that has the same vibe at garden-fountains.com. A water feature is perfect for an outdoor living area that is trying to pull off the elegant look.
#4: Not Planning Ahead
Now it’s the summer and you want to enjoy the fruits of your labor. However, there won’t be any if there is no planning. Usually, homeowners do all the heavy lifting in the spring and summer and ignore the garden in the autumn and winter. If you want anything to grow, you have to do some prep work even when the weather turns. Otherwise, there will be too much to complete when summer rolls back around.
What is the biggest gardening mistake that you make?
