I am still alive! Here is an update on the HG. I think it is getting better. I have all this time, only had mild to moderate HG. Nothing severe like hospitalization. Thank the dear lord. I have been given a book by another HG sufferer who read my previous blog posts and I am amazed at the strength of women who have suffered way more than I have. It has helped me to realize I am not alone in this battle and that I am actually one of the lucky ones.
Real quick for those of you that don’t know Hyperemesis Gravidarum or HG as it is easily called is a rare form of extreme morning sickness. It can range from mild to severe. Mild HG is morning sickness or a nauseated feeling all day, where you are vomiting numerous times a day but you are at least able to keep water down not requiring hospitalization. Keep in mind a normal pregnant woman might have 3 to 4 bouts of nausea a day and may vomit only twice to three times a day. The nausea is relieved by eating. With Hyperemesis, there usually is no relief. Suggestions like eating cracker, taking ginger, and B6 do not work for HG sufferers. It leaves them feeling debilitated and if not hospitalized, usually bedridden most of the day because the only thing that cures the nausea is sleeping thru it.
Severe HG is when you are puking 20 to 40 times a day and you can’t even hold down water! This requires hospitalization and a nutrition IV line to help save the mother and the baby. The book I have been reading has been about the story of this mom who suffered from HG so severely she was hospitalized for more than half her pregnancy. Her first pregnancy ended in the death of her baby, her second one resulted in a living healthy child. It is seriously a heartbreaking story, and I realized while I could relate, I couldn’t at the same time. The worst of my morning sickness was from 6 to 10 weeks. The last week has been better and I feel like it is getting better and I am slowly learning the tricks to not puking. Its a mental battle for me. I have ptyalism pretty bad, so this makes the nausea worse and if I didn’t have ptyalism, I think I might be about 90 percent right now.
For me morning sickness starts before I get out of bed in the morning. I’m usually really thirsty, but I find if I drink anything more than a sip when I first get out of bed, I’m puking it up later. So it has resulted in small bites of toast and very small sips of water first thing in the morning. If I eat in access of that, I’m throwing it up. As it is I have found the only liquids other than a milk shake that I can keep down is water and iced tea, but only after its been at least 1 hour from when I ate last. I can not eat and drink together, or I throw up everything. I get very thirsty. I also can only drink very ice cold water. Juices burn my throat and come back up, sodas or gingerale, make me burp so intensely that I throw that up too. So its just water or tea (decaf of course).
Now since say Thursday of last week, I have felt the morning sickness get better. I am no longer nauseated most of the day. Probably just about 4 to 5 hours a day total. Over the weekend I was able to run errands, clean, even til in our backyard because we are planting grass. This week I am taking on a massive project of getting junk out of a room in our house that hasn’t been lived in in almost a year and turning that room into a play room before it becomes Jaydon’s bedroom when the new baby comes. I will need for my morning sickness to be minimal during this time and next week I start taking on a fourth kid. I will be working a lot harder than I normally do with two babies and two toddlers.
So anyway, that is my update and of course if I truly am feeling better, you will be knowing it. My blog will be booming again because we are going thru a lot of blog worthy changes around here.
