Base Camp Campground Review

Now that we are RV owners, I will be doing some campground reviews on here. A few weekends back we stayed at Base Camp in Black Hawk Colorado just off of Golden Gate Canyon road. It was the first campground we stayed at that had water hookups. It was really nice to not have to fill our tank before heading to our campsite. Also traveling with full tanks can really lower your gas mileage.

The Positives:

This campground was charming and had a lot of amenities, even wifi that worked pretty well if you are the type that must stay connected. Of course, our spot might have had something to do with that. We had spot nine and the internet worked pretty well most of the time.

This campground has a mini store that sells basic amenities, lots of food options, alcoholic beverages, hot coffee and many of the convenience foods that you’d find in a gas station, along with gift store type apparel (speaking of gas, they sold gas too). They had laundry facilities and bathrooms with showers, that you could put .75 in for a five-minute shower. You could also buy the local paper, firewood, and propane if you needed some.

Not only did this campground cater to RVers, if you were without a tent or an RV, you could rent a cabin. I’ve seen images of the inside of their cabins and they are as cute as can be! They are camping cabins, so all they have are beds, bunk beds, a small desk inside, picnic tables outside and a place to grill outside. I do not believe the cabins have water hookups, so you’d have to wash your dishes in the laundry facilities area, and bring your own water or buy some at the Base Camp store.

Camping Cabins at Base Camp Camp Ground in Black Hawk Colorado

Right when you pull into this campground, you’ll see a playground right in front of the convenience store. This is where our kids hung out most of the time playing with other camp kids. This campground is located near some small lakes and ponds. You’d probably still need to drive to it, a few miles away. People come up to Black Hawk to visit Golden Gate Canyon State Park and to visit the Black Hawk Casino. When we visited, the rodeo was going on. You can find a list of local events here on Base Camp’s website. About seven miles away is Central City Colorado. Apparently, it’s known for having the “richest square mile on earth”, you can check out Central City’s Website to see what they have for food an entertainment.

Black Hawk, Colorado

Of the campgrounds we’ve stayed at so far, this one was the farthest we had been away from home with our RV, but also my favorite so far. I think I felt safe. If we forgot something we had the convenience store. In fact, Scott and I bought graham crackers, a margarita, and some canned Sangria to enjoy by our campfire. We brought our own firewood, but if you forgot it, you could purchase it right there.

Base Camp campsite

I can’t think of a lot of downsides to this campground that would prevent us from coming back, but here are a few things that would have been a little better.

  1. Our water hookup was on the opposite side of our RV. It would have been better if the hookups were on the other side where people’s slides normally come out. It seems that’s where most people’s water hookups are anyway. We ran the hose and put a carpet down so we didn’t trip on the line.
  2. Very close to neighbors: The sites were pretty close to one another so there wasn’t a lot of privacy, but I really don’t have many other campsites to compare this to. The more we visit campsites, the more I’ll get a better idea if sites are spaced close or far apart. In this campground, we just seemed rather close to one another.

Overall I give this campground 4 out of 5 stars. It was a very pleasant place to get away to.
