Not many people really enjoy doing household chores, but it is possible to turn a mundane task into a great workout. There’s absolutely no need to join a gym when you can get similar results from doing chores that need to be done anyway.
Does a Vacuuming Workout Really Work?
Any physical activity you do throughout your day that is not part of a planned workout routine is known as incidental exercise. Research shows that incidental exercise can play an important role in improving fitness, building core strength and boosting muscle tone.
Most health professionals recommend that you get at least 30 minutes of physical activity each day. What they forget to mention is that it’s fine to accumulate those 30 minutes in smaller blocks of time.
For example, if you spend 15 minutes vacuuming your carpets and rugs, you could burn around 43 calories. You’ll also be working your core muscles, your back, arms, and abs as you vacuum.
Later in the day you might push a cart around the store for 15 minutes while you do the grocery shopping. As you walk around the aisles you’re getting a moderate cardio workout. Pushing the cart also provides some resistance, which helps to activate core muscles while you walk.
Completing two simple household chores in one day helps you to achieve your 30 minutes of physical activity each day. It also provides you with a moderate workout that helps you boost your fitness levels.
Turn Your Chores into a Workout
It is possible to turn your mundane daily chores into a regular workout routine. The key is to find ways to make each chore fun.
When it’s time to vacuum the floors, switch on your favorite tunes and turn the task into an opportunity to work out. If you can’t hear the stereo speakers above the noise of machinery, plug-in the headphones and drown out the sound. Alternatively, you could shop around for some of the quiet vacuum cleaners available on the market.
Scrubbing the floors in the shower or bathroom is never a fun chore, but while you’re getting around on hands and knees keep in mind that you’ll be working your back, core, arms, shoulders and gluteal muscles at the same time as burning around 48 calories in 15 minutes.
Spend 15 minutes making the bed every morning. You’ll burn around 17 calories and you’ll be working your back, arms, and core muscles at the same time.
Outdoor chores also provide an opportunity to improve your health and fitness. Pulling weeds, raking leaves, or pruning bushes or shrubs all count towards your daily physical activity levels and work various muscle groups simultaneously.
Choose one simple household chore to complete each day. You’ll be getting a mini-workout completed without even entering a gym, your fitness levels will benefit, and you’ll find it much easier to keep up with those mundane tasks without wasting an entire day getting them done.
