It is much better for your overall health if you work on being nifty at fifty rather than someone who spends too much time sitting on the couch watching TV.

You might not be as fast or fit as you once were now that you have hit middle age. But there are still plenty of fun sports and activities that you can enjoy regardless of how old you are.

Here is a look at why it is important to stay fit. There is also an overview of why sports like swimming and yoga offer so many benefits. Keeping you fitter for life.

Live longer

In a few years time, the number of people in the U.S aged over fifty will have hit a record level.

If you are already part of that demographic. The good news is that you are likely to live longer than previous generations. But staying fit after fifty is the key to enjoying that potential longevity.

Regular exercise helps keep your muscles and joints stronger. It also slows down the aging process. If you want to love longer and enjoy life to the full. The answer is to give yourself a workout that is enjoyable and beneficial to your health.

Visit the gym anytime you want

Many of us find it a challenge to find the time to visit a local gym, but the perfect solution for getting a great workout is to set up your own gym, maybe using a covered area outdoors to enjoy the benefits of fresh air at the same time.

You can find a home gym that will suit your workout and exercise needs, and the great thing about having a setup in your home is that you can work on your fitness whenever the mood takes you, and without the hassle of traveling.

Get in the water

One of the best sports of all is swimming. It doesn’t matter what age you are. You can enjoy a good swim regardless of age and ability. Swimming gives your cardiovascular system an excellent workout. And this type of exercise is kinder on your joints and bones than an impact sport.

Regular swimming will also help keep your blood pressure in check and delay the decline of muscle mass.

It is estimated that one mile of swimming is as good as running four miles. So get in the water and enjoy a regular swim.

Get on your bike

Another great low-impact sport to consider is cycling.

Cycling will get your heart pumping and work your leg muscles. It can also be a social sport and you will probably be able to find a cycling club in your area. Joining a club will help you to cycle alongside people of all ages and abilities.

It is safer to stick to pathways and cycling trails if you can. Cycling in groups is not just more fun and sociable. It means you can look out for each other when you are on your bike.

Improve flexibility

Some sports might be more challenging than others when you are over a certain age. But Yoga is perfect for improving flexibility and boosting your levels of concentration.

It is not difficult to learn a few basic moves very quickly. You can then progress to more advanced positions once you have got the hang of how to work your body in just the right way.

There are plenty of professional athletes and sports people who include yoga as part of their fitness regime. You might want to do the same and enjoy the benefits this slow-moving activity can deliver.

If you want to enjoy the chance of a long and healthy life. Get involved in some sporting activities and work on staying fit.

  1. I love my daily walks and treks. Aside from that, I think Yoga is a great exercise as well, since you also get to meditate along with the physical exercises. It’s really nice to be able to be active, it does a lot for our health.

  2. After having cancer for the second time, I have really taken exercise to heart and now do all of my exercise in a pool as I have Fibromyalgia as well. This really seems to help me.

  3. These are great ideas. Many people should check with their physican first, though, esp if they have any current problems ie a bum knee, shoulder injury, heart, etc., to make sure your exercise program is safe.

  4. I think it’s cool, that, nowadays, people of all ages are encouraged to be fit and stay healthy. For example, you have the little kids dancing in the Cheerios commercial. Older people (and not just Cher! Big fan) are able to take advantage of so many fun and interesting ways to participate in fitness.
