Sometimes you come across a great deal when someone says they are selling something and you see that its only a fraction of the original retail value! One of Scott’s co-workers was selling this wooden swing set that came with their house. Since their kids had outgrown it, they were looking to re-use that space.
Now Backyard Discovery sells this swing set for $849, which probably doesn’t even include shipping. Scott’s co-worker was selling his for $250. I thought that was a screaming deal and told Scott we’d take it!
We sold our old metal swing set and made room for the new one in the back yard. But to even get the swing set into the backyard, we had to clear out the side of our house where we tend to keep yard clippings and other debris from past renovations. Its always been an eye sore for me and I’ve never felt like we could get rid of these things that piled up, fast enough. Instead of hitting the gym that day, my friend Rachel and I cleared out the side of the house so we could fit this swing set through to the backyard. I can’t tell you how tickled I was to see how fast we got it done! Last summer it was a slow grusum project niether Scott or I put much effort into.
With her help, it only took us one hour to clear out the side of the house! I was so happy for the help and I still owe her a lunch date!
That evening when Scott got home from work, we waiting to hear from the guy about the swing set. Once he heard from him, Scott went to help bring sections of it over to the house. They got the first two sections, the part with the swings and the monkey bars over to the house with no problems.
Then the tree house part of the swing set was the last to be moved over. Thinking it would be ok in his truck standing straight up, the guy put it in there and never used any ropes to keep it steady or from moving at all. As soon as he went to make a turn, the whole thing toppled over the side of his truck right out onto the busy street. Scott helped him get it back in his truck noticing a lot of busted and broken sections. Our hearts sank until we got a chance to look at it the next day. Thankfully the guy selling it to us decided to lower the price to $100 bucks and we accepted that offer thinking we could use the extra money we saved to work on it and hopefully bring it back to life.
When we took a good look at it and sat it up, the whole thing wabbled. It was not a stable play structure at all. Scott started counting all the pieces of wood that had been broken, cracked, or stripped from the screws, then we made a Home Depot trip. We bought about $90 bucks in supplies.
Saturday was an entire day project. We had to measure every piece of wood we had to replace. We had to replace all the 2×4’s and anything else cracked or broken. Unfortunately, the tarp that was on it, was shredded by the road it landed on and was unusable, so we had to buy a new one form BackyardDiscovery.com. That came to about $50 bucks.
Jaydon was waiting patiently all day for it to be put together.
This morning the canapy tarp was finally put on, but we knew it needed to be restained.
So we spent this saturday staining it. It was actually kind of theraputic.
We found an exact stain match!
And now the whole thing has a nice coat of weather proof redwood stain and it looks like nothing ever happened!
And most of all the kids are happy and playing outside because February right now is beautiful!
Braidy is loving the tree house part!
It’s nice that the kids will have this in their back yard this summer!
