Raclette cheese is especially popular in Switzerland, but it has become even more so in the United States and many European countries. Why’s that? The main reason so many folks enjoy themselves at the dinner table thanks to this type of dish is that the practice is essentially social and relaxing, and it allows everyone to choose whatever they want to eat.
Raclette cheese comes all the way from Valais, a Swiss region. Nowadays, the word describes both the cheese and the meal. There are several melting methods, some of which are easier than others. Back in the day, Swiss herdsmen used to gather around a campfire and melt raclette either near the flame or using an indoor hearth.
What does a traditional raclette meal include?
For a generous meal, you can use both Raclette, but also other types of cheeses that can range from sharp Cheddar to mozzarella, Gorgonzola, and Monterey Jack. Whatever your preferences, you need to make sure you have enough, because most diners usually consume at least 4 to 5 oz of cheese, especially if they want to make a whole evening out of their dining experience, enjoy some wine, and talk with friends and family.
The other foods you will need for a complete raclette experience range from sausage or braised beef to thinly sliced raw meat. If you have a raclette grill, your job will be much easier, because each and every one of the diners will practically cook their own food.
If you want to use raw ingredients, it might be a good idea to choose a grill that comes with a variable temperature setting, because in this case, you need to use a higher one on the top surface to make sure that the meat is cooked correctly. Potatoes should be either pre-boiled or partially baked because otherwise, they might take too long to grill or they might turn out partially raw.
Best of all, the cheese is melted in tiny trays placed under the main grill. The heat in these compartments will be slightly lower compared to that on the top so that the cheese doesn’t get burnt. Once it’s melted, it can be scooped and poured over the food in the plate.
Other things you can use to impress your diners range from fish, shrimp, and scallops, to any kind of veggies you may have at your disposal. You also have the freedom to serve the food along with fruits like apricots, papaya, apples, or pears.
There aren’t any typical sauces that the Swiss serve with this type of dish which means that you can use any of the condiments you and your friends enjoy.
As a tip, place everything on the table and let everyone enjoy themselves as they deem fit. The best thing about using a raclette maker is that you won’t have to run to the kitchen all of the time to bring this or that, depending on whatever anyone might want to eat.
