Lets just go right out and say it, no mom is perfect by any means and first time moms take a while to really feel comfortable with motherhood and its responsibilities, even if they have tons of advice and support. We used to get our image of “perfect mother/wife hood” from TV. You never saw The mother on “Leave it to Beaver” or the “Brady Bunch” stumble down the stairs in their pj’s looking for the coffee pot. They came out of their bedrooms already made up with pearls, perfect hair and all dressed up to simply do housework and take care of the children.
Moms looked like this:
Of course we know that isn’t really how it was, but it made you think you had to be like that to be “perfect”.
Its been over a year since I wore make-up on a regular basis or even jewelry other than my wedding ring. I was an office manager and had to look nice and professional every day. Mornings now days usually go like this, wake up, wash my face, brush my teeth while Hunky Hubs
is watching J (the only time I will be able to do this for the next 5 hours) put on something comfortable which usually is stretchy pants and a tank top. Its summer, its hot and our house has no air conditioning. I put my hair in a pony tail with some clips on each side and I’m ready for my day’s work.
I have definitely gotten braver with the pictures. Years ago you would have never seen me take a picture without make up on. This is my daily attire and ya know what, I don’t think my son minds much. 😉 No need to put on my pearls while I’m sitting at home doing laundry.
Since I run a home day care it’s not just my son I have to worry about. I have 3 toddlers running thru the house and no my house is not spic n span just because I’m a stay at home mother, I’m far from June Cleaver or even Carol Brady who had a maid. On any given day you will find toys strewn across the floor children’s books everywhere and the magnets on the fridge all over the kitchen floor. But I try to always start the morning off with everything picked up off the floor. I do dishes after lunch time and dinner except on Fridays and Saturdays. Afternoon nap time is my only free time all day, but I’m lucky to get a few hours completely to myself if I’m lucky enough to get all the kiddos to nap at the same time and usually I do. This is my blogging, news reading or Facebook surfing time, nope I don’t bake cookies in my free time or crochet.
And ya know what when Friday evening rolls around the last thing I want to do is dishes, so they usually sit in the sink til Saturday mid-day sometime, and I’m ok with that. Wednesdays and Sat or Sundays are laundry days for me. I do laundry more often since I have cloth diapers to wash. Every two days I mop my kitchen floor and we vacuum twice a week unless there is a need to do it again, and we probably steam clean our floors once a month. Our garage is no paradise either, it is filled with all our junk minus the pool table…which isn’t junk…just no place for it inside. This is a typical modern-day home and even though my grandmother kept a spotless house, I’m not sure if that is really important ya know? Shouldn’t it be about how happy we are and how much we love and spend time with our kids? I don’t make cookies or bake things very often, but will on an occasion….but I do make some mean breakfast burritos and a killer salsa. I’m a modern-day stay at home mom and my house isn’t always clean, and while some may look down upon that, I am more interested in giving hugs and kisses to my little man, taking him to the park and playing peek a boo with him.
