Last night I was eating dinner and my chunky monkey was studying my every move. Now let me explain with my first son. I unknowingly tried to force solids on the poor guy at 4 months. He cried and it ended in me breastfeeding the little one. For some reason I had it in my head from something someone told me that he “NEEDED” rice cereal for DHA nutrition. I was wrong, as I know now breastfeeding is all he really needs at this age. After the first traumatizing feeding experience we held off and waited. J was six months old before he tried his first solid that was not a grain.
I think too many parents are in a hurry to introduce solids to their babies, or they think that just because baby has a tooth, it means baby needs to eat. Studies show introduction of solids earlier than six months can lead to thyroid problems, food allergies and being over weight because a baby’s stomach simply doesn’t know how to process the food and sometimes the body never learns how. A lot of new parents turn to their own parents for advice on when to start solids and this isn’t necessarily the best advice to take even though your mom might have some pretty handy tricks up her sleeve. We know a lot more now about how we process food and what babies need nutritionally nowadays than your parents did in their day and it’s certainly not their fault. It was just a different time.
Anyway, back to J myster, I felt that his first solid food should be squash. He didn’t particular like it much. Thankfully I got other stuff for him to eat, but it wasn’t as sweet as his rice cereal mixed with breast milk. I did what the doctor advised and started J off on veggies before fruit…it didn’t particularly make him like veggies more because once we started on fruit, he didn’t want to go back. 😉 But I did what was advised.
So last night with Baby B studying me as I put each fork full of food to my mouth, he started making a chomping motion with his little chubby cheeks. So I thought hey, maybe its time to introduce some cereal. Here’s the video of his first reaction to eating something other than breast milk.
