J Myster’s Zoo Trip!

So about 6 weeks ago we took our little two-year old boy to the zoo and I promised a blog post about it, but I was in the middle of my terrible bouts of morning sickness and sleep deprivation.Well now that I have some time on my hands, I think I will finally blog about our little two day adventure.

See we live 2 and half hours away from the Phoenix Zoo, so it was a road trip and a nights stay in our favorite hotel. I was suffering from hyperemesis gravidarium, so I needed Zofran for the trip just to make sure I wasn’t puking on the side of the road. It was a successful trip. Not much puking and J loved the monkeys!

We got to the Zoo about 10am and it was a balmy 98 degrees that day but when you can imagine the temps that Phoenix can get up to, for example 118 the other day, you can appreciate 98 degrees, and I’m not talking about the boy band.

So of course when we get there, we are pointing the turtles out to J, floating in the water along the walk at the entrance to the Phoenix zoo, and J said “turtle” for the first time.

J was absolutely enamored with any kind of ape species from baboon, to gorilla. When he saw the gorilla’s tumbling in the grass, he was so excited and ran the length of the glass wall to try and see where they went, “he kept saying “monkey, monkey, wow, monkey!!!!”

It was a bit hot for him, he wasn’t used to the temps. So he was flushed most of the time.

J Myster is standing on the gate looking at the giraffes here, totally excited to see them.
And we have zebras, but he called them “horsies”
The picture doesn’t show the enormous size of the tortoise sitting in the shade of the rock right there, but lets just say its big enough for two full grown men to curl up in the shell. That one was huge!
When we got to the spider monkey’s we weren’t allowed to take strollers inside the exhibit, so Hunky Hubs took J and said J was so excited about the monkeys that would swing right in front of you from vine to vine. There was nothing really separating you from them. So of course after the exhibit, Hunky Hubs had to get J his very own spider monkey stuffed animal.

When we finally got the elephants, J was fading fast, but he did get to see this elephant swaying as if it was listening to a tune in his head. By the time we went to the next exhibit, J was asleep.

So we got thru about 90 percent of the zoo before he snoozed off, but I think he was so excited to see all the animals and especially monkeys and its been six weeks since we took this trip and he is still attached to that monkey that you see in his stroller. He sleeps with it and its very special to him.

  1. I love trips to the zoo. I live in California and we drove about an hour and a half away last week to visit the San Francisco Zoo. I was thinking of taking a trip to the Sacramento Zoo this week (this one is local).

What do you think?
