Making Moving Fun: Easy Tips to Take the Work Out of Working Out


The majority of us appreciate the importance of exercise to our overall health, but a much lesser number tend to work out periodically, or not at all.

The reason why there is such a difference between our acceptance of the need to exercise regularly and actually going out and doing it on a regular basis, is often down to the fact that it is not always viewed as a fun activity.

Exercise together

There is no reason to exercise alone, unless you want to, so involving your friends and challenging each other in a fun way, can definitely make the idea of regular exercise much more enjoyable.

You can soon inspire each other to hit new goals and when you are sharing your exercise routine with friends, it can often be easy to forget you are going through a physical routine because you are having such a good time.

Don’t be dominated by the scales

Far too many people make the mistake of being heavily influenced by the number that they see when they step onto their scales at home, which is a mistake and can quickly ensure that you don’t enjoy working out as you think you are not seeing the results from your efforts.

The number on the scale that can often dominate your mood and level of commitment to working out, is not what matters so much as the ratio of muscle to fat, so don’t be dominated by the scales if you want to enjoy your workout more.

Exercise your mind as well as your body

It is easy to concentrate on making changes to your body and not look at the bigger picture, but if you can find a form of exercise that has the ability to change your mood and maybe your life too, rather than just your body, then you are going to exercise with a smile on your face.

Losing weight and becoming more toned will prove to be a good motivational tool for sure, but if you can find an activity that manages to change your mood in a positive way as well as giving you a workout, you are onto a winner.

Don’t get stuck in an exercise rut

It is worth remembering that you body is very good at adapting to new challenges, like a new exercise regime, but when you then repeat those same exercises over a period of time, your muscles will simply adapt to make the exercise easier and no longer test you.

It is easy to get stuck in an exercise rut and if your body begins to feel that way, it will think for itself that it has no reason to continue trying to develop your strength. Muscle memory can soon take the fun out of your exercise routine when you are no longer being challenged, so you need to switch it up on a regular basis.

The key elements to work on are duration, tempo and resistance, so work on changing these elements around and make your body think more about what it is doing, by developing new and exciting exercise routines on a regular basis.

Smaller goals work

It is way too easy for many of us to get a bit disheartened when we don’t seem to be getting just reward for the effort being put in.

A good way of ensuring that you enjoy your exercise routines more and stay motivated, is to set a series of mini-goals, often with a two-week benchmark. This way you can find yourself celebrating reaching your goals on a regular basis, and those smaller victories all add up to keep you smiling and keep you motivated,

Try something new

Taking on a new exercise challenge that you know nothing about, can really get you buzzing and it doesn’t matter that you don’t know how to do yoga or latin dancing, as that is the whole point.   1. It is so good to get out every day with the kids and dog and exercise. I have a really nice park 5 blocks away and getting out walking is what I do and is really helpful with my weight loss.

  2. I am trying to do yoga and walking. It isn’t easy when there is fibromyalgia and DVT involved but I am not used to just sitting around.

  3. You make a very good point, Heather. What most of us do is regard exercise as a punishment for gaining weight. That way it’s always going to be a chore & not fun.
