NASCAR 3 Lap Ride Along Experience at PIR

Adults BrentwoodHome Pillow

Last weekend we went down to Phoenix so Hunky Hubs could experience what it was like to be in a race car. We went to Phoenix International Raceway and he got to sit passenger side on a three-lap ride along. Actually, it was more like a 2 lap ride along, but I won’t complain because we got such an awesome Groupon for the experience.

Phoenix International Raceway is actually in Avondale so it was neat to explore that side of town. I had been there once during a NASCAR truck series event and boy was it loud! I remember having to plug my ears with cotton balls. That was probably 10 or 12 years ago.

At any rate, I was excited to see Hunky Hubs do a little something out of the ordinary. This was actually a birthday gift. His birthday was in January and I wanted to do something completely different from our traditional order out food and eat in kinda thing. I think we did that anyway, but this was just the icing on the cake.

Now my husband has a fear of heights, so he isn’t one to sky dive or do anything like that, and he loves watching NASCAR because he is a Dale Jr. fan, so I thought this would be a great experience for him.

We stayed the night in Avondale but before we could even settle down for the evening, we ended up fighting with a very rude check in staff at the Holiday Inn Hotel who told us that even though we booked our room to be non-smoking that “because we used Expedia, it’s never a guarantee that we get what we paid for”. We were pissed, went up to the non-smoking room and it smelled so bad, we immediately had to do something about it. I was upset and called the 1-800 number to the hotel, who told me that their reservation had us in a smoking room but that my reservation I was looking at right in front of me was wrong. So Hunky Hubs calls Expedia about the situation who was extremely apologetic with us. Expedia contacts the hotel, and they hang up on Expedia repeatedly about the situation. So Expedia moves us to another hotel in the area free, then gives us a $100 credit. We were so glad to be out of there and the hotel was a definite upgrade.

Thank you Expedia!

Anyway, back to the real reason why I’m blogging, which was Hunky Hubs racing experience. The next morning we pack up our stuff and headed blocks away to the raceway.

Actually that’s a lie, we had to hit a Starbucks first! 😉

We get to the raceway and I load up the kids in the stroller and Hunky Hubs checks in.

This is Hunky Hubs standing in line getting ready to get into a racecar.
J myster was really excited to see him race and to see the racecars.

Here Hunky Hubs is sitting in this Best Buy racecar getting ready to start.

Now the three-lap ride along isn’t actually three laps. It starts right on pit road as soon as the car starts moving, then there is one full lap, then the second lap is returning to pit road. So it is a little deceptive. The other deceptive part is, in the description of your experience, you are made to believe that you will be racing at about 130 miles an hour. That’s not really the case. From the video below we estimated that Hunky Hub’s racecar got up to about 92 from just knowing the length of the raceway and the time it took.

Hunky Hubs did have fun and said the best part about the whole thing were the turns and that you did feel some G-force when you were making those turns. He enjoyed the experience and may do it again as a driver in the future. I got an excellent deal on this thru Groupon and this experience was 75% off. I couldn’t pass up giving my Hubby a little bit of that racecar driver experience.

  1. I’m sorry Andrea! We tend to stay low key when we go down to the valley because 20 some people want to get together and we never have time for everyone and then people’s feelings get hurt. For this Scott was able to take a half day on Friday and we were back on the road by 1pm the next day to get to Flagstaff. The kids did not do very well when we were eating out. They wanted to run around everywhere…so we tend to try not to subject people to them. 😉

What do you think?
