Ordinary, And I’m Okay with that!


Prompt: “Ordinary”


Being a little girl in school there were so many thing I thought was wrong with me. Turns out I’m pretty normal across the board. I’m ordinary, and you know what? I am extremely stoked about that! Why? Well I used to think quite the opposite, that I was so ugly and disfigured you could point me out from a crowd. I had chicken legs, I had clown ears that I used to try to tape back to my head as a kid. I had to wear this bulky back brace in school under my clothes that made me look like a little four-foot line backer. I spent many a phoenix summer wearing bulky sweat shirts to hide the brace. I remember getting home peeling off my sweaty clothes just to see the heat induced hives all over my skin.

I sooo wanted to be just ordinary.

I wanted to blend in and not be noticed. Then when I was a walking teenage hormone, my self-esteem was even more impacted with acne. I wore way too much make-up to try and hide the acne, which only made it worse and I spent a lot of time thinking my appearance was so far from ordinary that I tried to hide everything I could about me. Certainly no boy would ever find me attractive, I didn’t have enough boobage or anything that anyone would like in a person.

I’m so glad those days are over and I’ve accepted myself for who I am. I still don’t like my post pregnancy body I see in the mirror, but it doesn’t affect me like I used to be affected by it. I am loved, I have an awesome husband and two beautiful boys and they’ve helped me to see myself from the inside out, not the outside in…

  1. That post pregnancy body is beautiful. I would rather have some saggy parts and be a mom than have my pre-pregnancy body and have no kids!! Wear it proudly!!!

  2. Oh boy can I relate to this. Thankfully, self acceptance (and even self-kindness) has continued to grow in me throughout adulthood. I would never want to revisit my teenage years (girls can be cruel). As a mother – one of my greatest hopes is to teach my own children to love themselves (be kind to others) and have the tools to teach resilience as they grow. xxx

  3. There are so many times in life when we battle between wanting to blend in and wanting to stand out. So hard to find the right balance. So glad you’ve found yours now.

  4. Girls can be cruel. I remember all too well how mean they can be. So I vow to make sure my kids know that bullying is unacceptable and home they are never on the delivery or receiving end of it.
