Sending My First Grader Off To School!

So a couple of nights ago I was reading a really funny post about Going back to school in the 1970s verses going “back to school” in 2014 written by Victoria Fedden from and its so funny all the work, time and money us parents put into this whole going back to school thing. I had to laugh at myself because I identified myself in the 2014 mom. We kinda over do it don’t we?  To feel like I’ve got this parenting thing down, I totally go overboard sometimes. It was quite different in the 1970’s. You certainly didn’t have bento box making moms cutting sea creatures out of food and posing on the front steps with a sign….. I laugh at it, yet I AM THAT MOM. I make the bentos boxes, with the mickey mouse shaped sandwiches and write those encouraging notes for my child’s lunch box not to mention the first day of school photo shoot with the chalk board sign. I even took a picture of my bentos box I made last year for my son’s first day of kindergarten. A little overboard right? But I am a blogger, so I take a picture of EVERYTHING!

And did he eat that all!? NO! He wasted more food bringing his lunch home from kindergarten than he had his whole life til that point. But I HAD to make sure I sent him off to school with the perfectly packed lunch.

Fast forward 1 year later and yes I’m still making the Bento box lunches, but that’s just because that’s the kind of food my son has always eaten and it packs so perfectly into his lunch blox.  I know in the 1970s most kids had brown bag lunches. But I’m ok with being THAT MOM that maybe goes a little overboard because they’ll be my memories to look back on.

Anyway, on to my son’s first day of school. He started first-grade last Thursday! First-grade people! I started this blog two days after he was born back in 2009, and now I have a first grader! The summer flew by and now (in Arizona at least), school is already in session. I wish we’d start after Labor day like the rest of country, but we have to be different I suppose.

Here’s our first day of school pictures: Photo Aug 09, 7 58 32 PM

He’s sporting a new haircut, new school clothes and back-pack and totally ready to meet up with his friends Zane and Noah!

The men of the house….

JaydonandBraidy1stgradeI Still have a couple of years left with Baby B, or um….Mr. Braidy until he goes off to school. I totally don’t mind and love the extra one on one time I have with him now. It’s kinda needed since he’s always had to share me with his big brother.

Big dude on campus!

Are your kids back to school yet or do they go back in September?

  1. Congrats Heather! He looks super excited for the year to come and it looks like you sent him off in the most thoughtful of ways. Wishing him a great school year!

  2. Awww….he looks so cute and so ready for big school. We don’t go back until September (as you know) and yes, the parents over here do go above and beyond for their littles as well, but I think it is a sweet gesture and gives the little ones a source of comfort, especially on the first day. 🙂

    1. Oh good! I’m so glad its not just a crazy American thing. I think little things like this totally help kiddos feel special and like they are important and thought of when they are away from home.

  3. He’s just too adorable for words! I don’t have kids, I actually just gradated college last year but my mom is a grammar school teacher and I’ve been helping her get her classroom together for the Fall! School starts in September here <3

  4. Awww what a lovely family! Love the photos and his lunch box looks really healthy and yummy. I’m sure he will have a time of his life in school. I still remember how emotional it was sending mine to first grade 2 years ago 🙂

    1. I’m so surprised I didn’t cry this time, but I still have a little one at home and I’m sure when that day comes I’ll be in tears all over again! 😉

  5. Thanks, for stopping by my blog. I’ve always wanted to do the bento box thing…ok more for my lunches than my son’s lunches. I used to make my son his school lunch but then I discovered he was much happier getting the school lunch. It costs me a bit more but he is happier cause he can pick what he wants to eat. I always pack him a healthy snack though for snack time (he is in special ed and they have snack time everyday). I can’t believe my son is going into third grade. I just got back into blogging but when I started (September 3, 2010) he was just turning 3 and now he’ll be turning 8!! Where did the years go? What’s worse is my stepdaughter is a senior in high school this year. When did that happen? She was three years old when I first started dating her father…now she is driving and will be off to college soon. ACK!!

    1. Ha ha! Yeah time just flies by! My son has a hot lunch one day a week mainly because I want him to try foods that maybe he doesn’t get the chance to try at home. So are you ready for school to be back in session!? I had mixed feelings about it, but love embracing change.

    1. Yeah he’s already dropped a few new names as friends since school has started. I’m glad to see he’s making buddies, I think it makes school a lot easier when you have friends.

  6. What a cutie! I’m going to have to go read the scary mommy post, though I didn’t start school til the 80s, lol. My littlest one is starting kindergarten, and I’m feeling so old, lol.

  7. This is totally awesome that you do so much for the kids. I love the lunch box setup and the picture with the chalkboard. I took a bunch of pictures when my kids went off to kindergarten. My baby is starting college Aug. 24th. which I will be taking a few pictures. lol Thanks for sharing.

  8. Hehehehe it is kinda ridiculous how us moms do go all crazy over the top!! Love my parents to death, but I had the opposite kinda parents growing up so I feel Like sometimes that’s why I might over do certain things… you said, makes us feel we have this parent thing down lol…

  9. Parenting do change some with the times right.
I don’t make the lunches anymore, they are begging me to again, but I am that mom too.
Maybe I’ll make lunches again soon.

Your little ones are simply adorable. I take the photos with signs too, but you give me a great idea about putting the date in it!! Thanks.

My children went back to school today!

  10. My kids go back soon and it is always a bittersweet day for me. I love seeing them grow up, but I wish I could keep them little for just a little bit longer. It looks like your little guy is ready to go!

What do you think?
