The concept of time evades babies…they don’t know what it is…..they just have a biological clock that parents hope they can tune just right. With J, the last few days have been difficult. Last night at 10pm he was wide awake. Daddy brings him to bed from the crib and not only is he very talkative, he’s rolling over on his tummy rocking and looking at me and laughing and he’s just having a grand ol time ready to play. Hunky Hubs and I look at each other thinking…God if he wasn’t so cute, we’d wring his little neck.

I miss the days when he would sleep for two hours on end during the day. Now I’m lucky if I get him down for 1 nap all day long. Mean while the other baby I’m watching has 4 naps in the 12 hours I had him today and J had a 45 minute nap, then a separate 30 minute nap right before daddy got home. Of course like every baby he fights sleep, but I would just like to keep him a sleep for a good amount of time.

I have come up with ways though to entertain the little squirt while I attempt to get housework or errands done. The only tough part is the teething tantrums. Doesn’t matter what you do, he screeches at the top of his lungs and the oragel, teething tablets and Tylenol just don’t work fast enough. I always hope that one of the three of those things will put him to sleep, but I never get that lucky.

J’s new thing…sreaming at his toys! Yep!! He screams at them if the toy doesn’t do what he wants it to do. For example he has this little toy car that he loves playing with….but only for a certain amount of time before he gets frustrated with it. I mistakenly showed him that the wheels make the car move and you can roll it on the carpet. Well his little hands just don’t work like mommy’s and he’ll rub the car on the floor and screech at the top of his lungs because it’s not rolling. Then he grabs the car puts it in his mouth and tries to rub/roll it on the floor again. He’ll look at me with a desperate plea and screech again. I find it utterly frustrating to hear this shriek and it almost makes me want to scream myself, but I bite my tongue, take the little blue car away and give him something else.

We do this all day long with all of his toys, until I take each one of them away and give him another one to yell at. I can see it now, he’ll be watching a commercial on TV and when he finally gets the toy he’s been begging mommy and daddy to have, he will be disappointed that it doesn’t actually fly and drop stealth bombers. Do I have to mention he is only 5 months old and already bored? Good Lord, what’s next?
